Frequently Asked Questions

Let's Talk Ingredients

Lactic Acid comes in many different forms, and we are intentional with the forms we use in our formulations to bring you effective, yet gentle solutions. All of our products are formulated with Ammonium Lactate (a nod to our brand name!), which is a pH-balanced type of Lactic Acid that results in a gentle-r exfoliation and made with your skin in mind.

We use Ammonium Lactate salts in our formulas, which is a pH-balanced type of Lactic Acid that results in gentler exfoliation and made with your skin in mind. We test the levels of Lactic Acid in all of our formulas, so the % concentration is at therapeutic levels. We also manufacture with high quality controls and high purity standards for improved consistency and an end product you can feel comfortable using.

All of our products are formulated with clinically proven concentrations of Lactic Acid, ranging from 5% to 15%. The concentration is the percentage of Lactic Acid in the lotion or cream’s formula. If you’re new to AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids), we recommend starting with our 5-7% concentrations in our Daily Nourish 5% and Daily Vitamin C products. If you’re looking for more advanced or targeted treatments, we recommend our products with 15% Lactic Acid.

Check our product pages for more detailed information (like skin suitability, lactic acid concentrations, and benefits) or try our product finder quiz!

Our Lactic Acid, listed on the Ingredient Label as Ammonium Lactate, is derived from a fermentation process of corn and manufactured in USA.

Ultraplex® is formulated with pH-balanced Ammonium Lactate. AmLactin uses Ultraplex® for gentle, yet effective exfoliation that boosts cell turnover and deep hydration.

AmLactin products are pH-tested and are between 4.5 and 5.5 for gentle exfoliation.

Our products are formulated without fragrance to minimize skin irritation. That said, the Lactic Acid salts we use in our formulas do have a naturally occurring smell that fades away after application. Some describe it as maple syrup, and some describe it as medicinal, and it can vary from batch to batch and with the unique pH of your skin, but have no fear - that just means it’s working!

While you might be used to or seeking a multi-sensorial experience in your bodycare routine with fragranced lotions and creams, we have never added any fragrances or perfumes to our products. Research tells us that fragrance and perfumes are bad for the skin, especially sensitive skin - they’re irritating, drying, and can weaken the skin barrier.

So yes, our Lactic Acid might have some smell - we think there’s some power in the potent, so we don’t cover it up.

However, feel free to layer your favorite fragranced lotion, cream, spray, or mist, if you so desire!

We don’t use artificial dyes or pigments in our products, which means that the natural color may vary – that’s normal! The science behind it? Oxidation as the active ingredients come into contact with the air - but, don't worry, this does not impact our formulas' efficacy!

We use Aminopropyl Ascorbyl Phosphate, which is a skincare favorite because it’s a stable form of Vitamin C. Also, we use a level that has been clinically studied to provide efficacious results!

While we spend a lot of time ensuring we have the best ingredients, we cannot guarantee the source of every ingredient to be completely vegan at this time. We can confirm that our Lactic Acid (listed as Ammonium Lactate on the ingredient list) is plant-derived from fermentation of corn and not sourced from dairy, which is sometimes a trigger for eczema.

No, none of our formulas contain shellfish or have come into contact with shellfish.

Our products are free from pork-derived ingredients.

We can guarantee that our company does not test on animals. Our company does not test formulations under research and development on animals nor do we test ingredients on animals.

We do not sell our products in any country that requires animal testing and we do not sell our products in China.

We do have a cruelty-free policy, ensuring safe and humane sourcing of our materials and do not test on animals.

The source of glycerin is sourced from vegetables.

While we do not expect any of our formulas to be comedogenic or clog pores (in fact - our formulas gently exfoliate to help unclog pores!), we have not tested most of our formulas to be non-comedogenic at this time.

Questions on Product Usage

AmLactin®'s products get deep. They don’t just sit on your skin's surface the way most moisturizers do - AmLactin® is powered by multi-tasking Lactic Acid, which works with your skin’s natural renewal processes to exfoliate, boost cell turnover, and hydrate skin. It’s the perfect way to simplify and amplify your bodycare routine!

Our formulas are specifically made to care for the skin on your body, but yes, you can also use AmLactin® on your face! We recommend testing a small area on your face first and gradually increasing the usage and frequency based on your specific skin needs. Please note that the skin on your face is typically more sensitive, so check with your dermatologist before applying on your face if you have sensitive skin. We also recommend avoiding using our products on or around your eyes.

Yes, you can use AmLactin on your scalp, if you’re looking for some additional support in gently exfoliating and deeply hydrating the skin up there. Some have found AmLactin helps alleviate dry, itchy scalps. We recommend trying a small amount first to ensure it works well for you. If irritation occurs, please discontinue use and contact a healthcare professional.

1-2 times daily or as directed by a physician. Mild stinging or irritation may occur on sensitive or broken skin. If this persists, discontinue use. Avoid contact with the eyes. Always use AmLactin® as directed.

Keratosis Pilaris, sometimes referred to as "KP," "chicken skin," or "strawberry skin," is a common skin condition that causes dry, rough patches and small bumps on areas of the skin. Typically, KP pops up on upper arms or legs, but can be found on other parts of the body.

The science behind it? This skin condition typically develops when the skin produces too much keratin, which blocks hair follicles, resulting in bumps. This condition cannot be cured, but we can help smooth it out.

While all our higher Lactic Acid concentration products should help, we developed our KP Bumps Be Gone Cream to specifically help combat this common condition through gentle exfoliation of those blocked pores and deep hydration of the usually dry skin.

AmLactin works by gently exfoliating and renewing skin’s appearance.  This is achieved with our lactic acid salts, which help even skin tone and give skin a more radiant appearance.  All our formulas contain clinically proven concentrations of lactic acid salts, so you know you are using efficacious products you can trust with AmLactin!

While storage conditions and use patterns vary, AmLactin® is best when used within two years of purchase.

We are proud to share that our Daily Nourish Lotion with 5% Lactic Acid and Daily Nourish Cream with 5% Lactic Acid have been awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance™ by the National Eczema Association (NEA). The NEA awards the Seal to products that are deemed suitable for people with eczema or sensitive skin. Products are reviewed by an expert panel based on a rigorous criterion of ingredients, content, and formulation, as well as testing data on sensitivity, safety, and toxicity. These two products will be listed with all Seal products on the Seal Product Directory at NationalEczema.org.

We use clinically proven concentrations of Lactic Acid in our formulas. While Lactic Acid is a gentle AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), it still is an AHA, which may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. We recommend you use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear AmLactin and go outside – we just want to make sure you’re practicing good skin health and protect your skin from the harsh sun.

AmLactin can be used on children aged 2 years and older. However, children’s skin is typically more sensitive, so we recommend starting with one of our formulas with a lower percentage of Lactic Acid first. We also always recommend confirming with your pediatrician or healthcare professional.

While we have not done specific testing on pregnant or nursing women, we believe that AmLactin is safe to use as directed while pregnant or nursing as it is a cosmetic lotion that is free from fragrance, dyes, parabens, and phthalates. However, since every pregnancy and nursing journey is different, we always recommend checking with your healthcare provider.

AmLactin immediately hydrates and restores skin radiance.
Studies have shown that AmLactin shows best results (providing better skin barrier, smoother skin) if used as directed for 4-8 weeks.

Help Me With My Shopping Experience

We’ve always formulated our products to be fragrance-free to minimize skin irritation, but we heard you – our products would sometimes have a little bit of a… smell. Some called it medicinal, others called it maple syrup, and it did vary from batch to batch and depending on your skin’s unique pH. This was naturally occurring from our Lactic Acid salts; HOWEVER, we unlocked a new upgraded, higher quality and purity Lactic Acid salt source that allowed us to reformulate all of our formulas to not only reduce that original smell, but also provide an even better, more premium skin experience! We are SO excited to introduce these new and improved formulas starting late 2024.

Please note, sometimes it takes some time for the latest and greatest formulas to reach store shelves, depending on where you shop. For now, you’ll find a yellow banner on the top of the new formulas, which will be a good indicator of whether the formula is the new one.

Each of our formulas is tailor-made for different skin concerns, whether you’re looking to maintain healthy-looking skin or targetting tricky concerns like Keratosis Pilaris, with the right concentration of Lactic Acid and supporting ingredients.
